Day Drinking Wine from Portugal: Your Guilt-Free Afternoon Guide
By Inès Deroche & Tom Simpson - Founders of Delância
Let's be honest. The bubbly goes down so well on a Saturday afternoon at 2pm.
Day drinking gets a bad reputation it doesn't deserve. We're not talking about a bottle of warm red before noon on a Tuesday. We're talking about that long, slow, golden afternoon — a picnic blanket, good company, nowhere to be. Or a lazy Sunday lunch that bleeds happily into the evening. Or that first warm day of the year when the patio finally gets some sun and someone (wisely) suggests opening something cold.
For those moments, Portugal has been quietly making some of the best day drinking wines in the world. And we think it's time more people knew about it.
Why Portuguese Wine Was Made for Drinking in the Daytime
Portugal sits in a sweet spot — literally. Atlantic breezes cool the vineyards, keeping the grapes fresh and lively even in the heat. The result? Wines with natural acidity, lower alcohol, and a brightness that doesn't knock you sideways after one glass.
This isn't an accident. Portuguese winemakers have spent centuries crafting wines for the table — wines meant to be drunk with food, with friends, over long unhurried hours. Not wines to be analysed. Wines to be enjoyed.
That's a very different starting point from, say, a big Australian Shiraz or a heavily oaked Chardonnay. Those are evening wines. Armchair wines. Statement wines. Portuguese wines — particularly from regions like the Minho, the Alentejo coast, and the Setúbal Peninsula — are afternoon wines. Outside wines. More please wines.
What to Look for in a Day Drinking Wine from Portugal
Not all Portuguese wines are created equal for daytime drinking. Here's our completely biased (but accurate) guide to what you want:
Lower alcohol. Anything under 12.5% ABV is your friend when the sun is out. Portugal produces a wealth of wines in this range, particularly whites and rosés from the cooler northern regions. You can have a second glass without rearranging your afternoon plans.
A crisp mouth acidity. This is what makes a wine refreshing rather than heavy. That lively, mouth-watering quality that makes the next sip as good as the first. Portuguese grape varieties — many of which exist nowhere else in the world — deliver exactly that, thanks to the Atlantic influence on the vines.
Fruit-forward, not oak-forward. Save the barrel-aged stuff for dinner. For daytime drinking, you want wines that lead with fresh fruit, florals, and herbs — not vanilla and toast. Portugal's indigenous white varieties like Arinto, Antão Vaz, and Fernão Pires do exactly that.
Light enough to pair with everything. Cheese. Charcuterie. A sandwich. Nothing. The best day drinking wines are the ones that don't demand a specific food pairing. They just… work.
The Wines We'd Take to a Picnic (Or a Sofa)
We started Delância because we fell in love with wines that felt made for real life. Not for tasting notes. Not for occasions with dress codes. For the in-between moments — the Tuesday night that turned into something lovely, the Sunday that needed a soundtrack.
Our sparkling botanical wines come from Baleizão, deep in the Alentejo. If you know Alentejo, you might be raising an eyebrow right now — it's Portugal's sun-baked inland region, better known for full-bodied reds than anything light and fizzy. That's exactly what makes Delância unexpected. We found something totally different there: a wine with real freshness, botanical character, and a sparkling energy that nobody sees coming from that postcode.
For the picnic basket, we'd go straight for Delância. It travels well, it's brilliant cold, and the bubbles make it feel like a small occasion even when nothing particular is happening — which is honestly our favourite kind of occasion. If you want a second bottle in the mix, our Atlântico is a beautiful companion: a little more laid-back, just as easy to love.
If you haven't tried a chilled Portuguese sparkling botanical wine on a warm afternoon, you are behind schedule and we say that with love.
Day Drinking, Done Right
A few ground rules — because we believe in enjoying wine well, not just often:
Keep it cold. Portuguese whites and rosés are almost always better slightly colder than you think. If in doubt, add another ten minutes in the fridge.
Go smaller. A 125ml pour lets you actually taste what's in the glass and means the bottle lasts longer. More occasions, better memories.
Share with friends. Delância was made for sharing. There's something about a bottle with bubbles and botanicals that makes people lean in, ask questions, and pour another round. It's a conversation starter disguised as a wine — bring it somewhere and you'll see what we mean. Plus, a bottle split between three or four people on a sunny afternoon is arguably the perfect unit of happiness.
Choose the right bottle. This is where we'd humbly suggest starting with Delância. But we're biased, and we'd rather you find out for yourself.
